The Digital Ark (TDAC) partnered with the Smithsonian Digitization Program Office and Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage in order to preserve and provide online access to a collection of album covers from the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. This rapid image capture project was accomplished on-site with the use of a mobile studio to digitize materials on location from historic and sensitive collections that cannot be transported off-site. TDAC utilized RICEpadi™ (short for Rapid Image Capture Engine), its custom-developed system which tracked descriptive and administrative metadata at the image level, to support the rapid image capture workflow of this project thereby facilitating the handling of objects in conjunction with digitization and post-processing. The resulting high-resolution digital images meet the guidelines established by the Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines Initiative (FADGI), which sets the standards for digital images used by federal institutions such as the Smithsonian Institution and Library of Congress.
